Two things that have been taking up a lot of my time lately are Tim Burton movies and my cell phone.
So, lets start with the fun stuff first. Tim Burton is a director my best friend and I have loved for a long time, and since Halloween is coming up I took it upon myself to rewatch some of his movies. They have a creepy, dark vibe to them that makes them especially suitable to this time of year, even though we tend to watch them all year round. (Nightmare Before Christmas most commonly for me even though its the only holiday themed one!) So far in the past two weeks I've watched:
-Nightmare Before Christmas (Ft. My favorite Pumpkin King Jack)
-Big Fish (Which never fails to make me cry at the end)
-Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (Oompa-loompas have creeped me out since I was a kid and they still do...)
-The Corpse Bride (An old favorite that I haven't seen in a while, but the ending saddens me everytime because its just. not. fair. )
-Coraline (One of the creepiest in my opinion, the characters, the idea, the buttons...)
And I still have yet to watch these before Halloween comes:
-Edward Scissorhands (Honestly, I'm pumped to watch this. It's been a while.)
-Sleep Hollow (I've never seen this one, but its a classic so I just have to have it on here.)
-Big Eyes (Got this from the library and I CANNOT WAIT TO WATCH THIS MOVIE THAT COMBINES ART AND TIM BURTON MY FAVORITE THINGS)
-Sweeny Todd (Haven't seen this one either...)
Thankfully, there is still time to watch these and even if it doesn't happen by Halloween, it will happen soon after because I'm actually very excited to watch them. Just need to grab my blanket, tea and my wii remote and I'll be set for the night. (Thanks for the tea and blanket Em and Siena)
Second point I wanted to make in this post is about my cell phone and cell phones in general. So just today, I got home from school and started homework around 4:30. I only had about ten to fifteen math problems to do and that was it. I had finished the rest during study hall and at school. I figured I had all this time to get it done, so I picked up my phone to check out my texts and social media. This should've taken a couple minutes tops. Instead, I found myself drawn into group conversations making plans for the weekend and talking about our homework instead of actually doing it. After some time had passed, I realized I should really be getting started on that math homework, so I decided to do it. I set down my phone and started the first problem.
After I finshed that problem though, my productivity streak ended and somehow I found myself again on my phone. Each text I sent I could feel the homework tugging at me and yet I kept texting! When 7:30 rolled around and I had not done anymore besides that first problem, I decided that my phone wasn't just being distracting, I was addicted to it. I couldn't put it down and it made me uncomfortable to think that my life and my success was being hindered by a cell phone and by liking instagram posts. I started to feel really jittery once I turned my phone off and started to work on my homework. The homework of course wasn't completed to the best of my ability, considering I was so stressed out that I had wasted three whole hours doing absolutely nothing, and now I had to do all the work I could've finished at 5:00.
After talking to some of my best friends, I decided that the best decision would be to take matters into my own hands. I made myself realize that I control my phone, my phone does not control me. And as crazy as it sounds, it took me this long to realize that I need to be limiting myself or it gets out of hand. So my plan for now is to turn it off while I'm doing homework and shut it off at 9:30 every night. Hopefully, this will have positive effects on my grades and my sleeping habits.
I know some of you guys may think this is absolutely crazy, because maybe you grew up with parents who made you turn in your phones or something, but they know what they are doing. You probably get a good amount of sleep everynight and are always done with homework in the time it was supposed to take you. I'm hoping that this will help me be like that too. Maybe this way I'll have more time to read books to do reviews for you guys, and more time to watch Tim Burton movies that aren't absurdly late at night :)
